While many of you already know me from my annual fundraising efforts, I would like to briefly introduce myself. I am a native of Ardara, Co. Donegal Ireland. I moved to Chicago in February 1964 and became an American Citizen in 1971. I'm a few months shy of my 72nd birthday but age does not stop me from doing what I really enjoy best and that's fundraising for a great cause!
I began participating in local fundraising in 1978 when I cycled 100 miles along Chicago’s lakefront to raise money for Multiple Sclerosis and was their top money raiser for many years. I've completed many 10k walks and 16.5 marathons, first of which was the Chicago Marathon. Most recently, in 2011 I started power-walking the Chicago marathon and always finished within the required time frame of 6 hrs.
It has been a tough year for my health after they found four blood clots in my body including my lungs, heart, and legs this past winter. I've just recently been cleared to exercise again. Staying active and exercising has made a tremendous impact in my ability to complete the above events and raise money that has impacted the lives of many needy people in the Chicagoland area. I’m determined that this set back in my health will not deter me from my 38th year of fundraising.
